Одиннадцатая поправка
Поправка к Конституции [Constitution, U.S.], принятая 7 февраля 1795, в день, когда последний необходимый для принятия Поправки 12-й штат Северная Каролина ратифицировал ее в своем законодательном собрании. Спустя два года была ратифицирована также штатом Теннесси. Не ратифицировали поправку штаты Нью-Джерси и Пенсильвания. Поправка гласит: "Судебная власть Соединенных Штатов не должна распространяться на какое-либо судебное дело, основанное на общем праве или праве справедливости, которое возбуждено либо ведется против одного из штатов гражданами другого штата либо гражданами или подданными иностранного государства". ["The judicial power of the United States shall not be construed to extend to any suit in law or equity, commenced or prosecuted against one of the United States by citizens of another State, or by Citizens or subjects of any foreign state"]. Принята под давлением штатов, которые боялись исков по долгам штатов. Поправка применяется только по отношению к штату как таковому и не препятствует возбуждению дела против должностного лица штата или предъявлению ему иска
